Coccidiosis is a common disease that affects the intestinal health of poultry worldwide. Susceptible animals exposed to Eimeria strains through fecal-oral transfer develop intestinal lesions that result in low weight gain, poor feed conversion, and mortality. Treatment with anticoccidial drugs has led to resistant strains of Eimeria and vaccination is now the preferred method for prevention. Vaccines elicit a pathogen-specific immune response that protects the animals against further parasitic challenge. Proliferation of these vaccines in live chickens poses a significant cost and a concerning animal welfare issue.
